Stava Mosters - the background story

The street Stava Mostersvägen was named after the widow Gustava who ran Mariehamn’s sailor home from 1883 until 1904.   After having lost both her husband and her son to the sea, Gustava began housing sailors in her own home. She provided them with room and board with a feeling of home while they were waiting for their next job at sea.  Gustava was very valued and respected in the community. Her guests began to call her Stava-Moster (“Auntie Stava”), and for many of the young sailors, she became the security that they needed when they couldn’t be at home.  The sailor’s home was important for Åland’s seafaring industry and due to Gustava Andersson’s contribution and well-done work, the street ended up being named after her.  If you want to know more about Gustava Andersson and Åland’s maritime history, we warmly recommend visiting Åland Maritime Museum and Pommern, which are just 500 meters away from Stava Mosters. There is also a statue of Gustava near the museum.  Gustava herself was the inspiration behind the name of our biggest apartment here at Stava Mosters. The other apartments are named after the managers who came after her.  Hanna Sommarström ran the sailor’s home 1905–1915. She was followed by Lydia Dreijer, who was manager 1915–1926. After that, the sailor’s home was managed by Edith Lönnroth up until 1940.
